Medical compression
Lymphoedema care in line with HAS recommendations
Lymphoedema care is based on combined decongestive therapy, as recommended by the HAS (the French National Authority for Health): drainage, compression + bandaging, skin care and adapted physical activity.
The orthotist plays a key role in setting up and monitoring compression.
The orthotist’s role
At Zola Orthopédie, we take care of compression and bandaging:
- Precise measurements of the affected limb
- Advice
- Advice on compression devices suited to the treatment phase (decongestion / maintenance), according to the prescription
- Fittings, adjustments and advice on putting devices on
Compression and bandaging aids
Alongside medical compression stockings and tights, we offer various devices to optimise lymphoedema care:
- Decongestion bandaging (short-stretch bandages)
- Textured systems such as Mobiderm® — standard / Autofit / or made-to-measure
- Adjustable wrap systems — Circaid / Juzo Wrap / Farrow Wrap / Sigvaris
- Night-time devices such as Jobst® Relax
- Specific ranges of soft, structured compression such as Juzo® Soft Compress — or Sleep Compress
- Bandages and accessories for support and skin protection
These solutions are chosen and adjusted according to the severity of the lymphoedema, skin tolerance and the patient’s independence, in line with HAS recommendations and the medical prescription.
Upper limb lymphoedema and medical compression
Upper limb lymphoedema most often appears after breast cancer surgery or treatment, but can also have other causes. It presents as swelling of the arm, a feeling of heaviness or tightness, or reduced mobility.
According to HAS recommendations, care is based on combined decongestive therapy, which includes:
- skin care,
- manual lymphatic drainage,
- medical compression,
- bandaging,
- and adapted physical activity.
- Gauntlets / mittens to control swelling of the hand
Aims of compression
- Stabilise the volume of the arm
- Limit the progression of lymphoedema
- Relieve the feeling of heaviness and tightness
- Improve mobility
- Stabilise the results obtained with drainage
Lower limb lymphoedema and medical compression
Lower limb lymphoedema is chronic swelling of the leg caused by a build-up of lymph. It may be primary (a malformation of the lymphatic system) or secondary (surgery, radiotherapy, infection, trauma…).
It causes persistent oedema, a feeling of heaviness and tightness, sometimes pain, and difficulty putting on shoes.
In line with HAS recommendations, its care is based on combined decongestive therapy, which brings together skin care, lymphatic drainage, medical compression and adapted exercise.
The orthotist’s role
At Zola Orthopédie, our orthotists provide complete, personalised care:
- Precise measurement and assessment of the lower limb
- Choice of compression type (socks, stockings, tights, specific devices)
- Compliance with the medical prescription
- Fittings, adjustments and learning how to put devices on
- Regular follow-up to adapt the equipment as the oedema changes
Compression solutions for the lower limb
Care varies according to the treatment phase:
Decongestion phase
- Multi-component bandaging (short-stretch bandages)
- Structured devices such as Mobiderm® (Thuasne)
- Juzo® Soft Compress: pads and padding for fibrotic areas
- Adjustable “wrap” systems for patients managing their own treatment or needing easier application
Maintenance phase
- Medical compression socks, stockings or tights
- Compression adapted to specific shapes (large legs, irregular oedema…)
- Night-time devices such as Jobst® Relax to stabilise results overnight
- Models available in different materials, colours and styles
Aims of compression
- Reduce the volume of the leg
- Improve lymphatic return
